FAQ — PetroHab™

Question 1

What are PetroHab's main products?

Accepted Answer

Our main product is the Petro-Habitat™ Hot Work Safety Enclosure (HWSE), often referred to in the oil & gas industry as a 'habitat' or 'pressurized welding enclosure.' Our HWSEs are modular and use PetroHab's patented Quadra-Lock® panel interlocking technology (US Patent Nos. 9,545,775 and 9,517,609) to connect panels together without the use of any zippers whatsoever. The panels are manufactured from U.S.-made premium silver/gray silicone coated fiberglass cloth that is ANSI/FM 4950 certified and capable of withstanding continuous temperatures of 1,000°F (over 500°C). We also manufacture automatic shutdown systems that are both ATEX and IECEx certified (IEC 60079-13) which monitor the differential pressure inside the HWSE and gases both inside and outside the habitat.

Question 2

What is Quadra-Lock® technology?

Accepted Answer

Quadra-Lock® is PetroHab's patented panel interlocking technology (US Patent Nos. 9,545,775 and 9,517,609). It allows HWSE panels to be affixed to each other in virtually limitless configurations quickly, providing both great shear and tensile strengths. Unlike competitors who use zippers, Quadra-Lock® eliminates zipper failure risk and removes the need for cumbersome A-type and B-type panels. A standard 2-meter x 2-meter x 2-meter Petro-Habitat™ can be assembled and fully pressurized in as little as 30 minutes.

Question 3

What is the difference between the Petro-Habitat, Petro-Shield, and Petro-Lite?

Accepted Answer

The Petro-Habitat™ is our full-featured flagship product for high-risk environments where ignition is likely — it features pneumatic air supply, window panels, intrusion/protrusion panels, and the full Safe-Stop SSS. The Petro-Shield™ is designed for mobile hot-work operations in the field, particularly pipeline work; its tubular aluminum frame is expandable in 4-foot increments and optional climate control can be added. The Petro-Lite™ is a lightweight, portable enclosure that two people can set up in under five minutes; it attaches to standard scaffolding and comes in open or closed top configurations.

Question 4

What is the Safe-Stop Safety Shutdown System?

Accepted Answer

PetroHab's Safe-Stop™ Safety Shutdown System (SSS) is patented by PetroHab and is the only system in the world certified to the latest version of the pressurized rooms standard IEC 60079-13:2017, regulated by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It is also ATEX certified. The Safe-Stop SSS continuously monitors the desired overpressure inside the habitat and monitors for flammable gases such as Methane and hazardous gases such as Hydrogen Sulphide both inside and outside the habitat. The Main Control Unit (MCU) contains an electrical blower, electronic damper, hot work and electrical plugs, audio and visual alarm, and an Emergency Shut Down (ESD) button. The Habitat Gas Assembly (HGA) includes a low-lying H2S detector, an LEL detector (raiseable to 3 meters for light gases like methane), an airlock control mechanism, ESD, audio and visual alarm, and optional Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide detectors.

Question 5

Are PetroHab™ habitats ATEX certified?

Accepted Answer

Yes. PetroHab's Safe-Stop SSS is third-party certified to the ATEX standard ('ATmosphère EXplosibles'). ATEX is the European standard for manufacturing products used in potentially explosive atmospheres. Our habitats and shutdown systems meet these requirements, giving operators confidence in Zone 1 and Zone 2 classified areas.

Question 6

What is IECEx certification and why does it matter?

Accepted Answer

IECEx is the IEC System for Certification to Standards Relating to Equipment for Use in Explosive Atmospheres. The international IEC 60079 series is widely recognized as the most important standard governing equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres such as those found in Zone 1 & 2 classified areas. PetroHab's Safe-Stop SSS is certified to IEC 60079-13:2017 — the latest version of the pressurized rooms standard — making it the only system of its kind with this certification.

Question 7

What does ANSI/FM 4950 certification mean for the panels?

Accepted Answer

ANSI/FM 4950 is the certification standard for the premium silver/gray silicone coated fiberglass cloth used to manufacture all PetroHab™ panels. This U.S.-made material is capable of withstanding continuous temperatures of 1,000°F (over 500°C), providing the fire-retardant properties essential for safe hot work enclosures.

Question 8

In what countries is PetroHab represented?

Accepted Answer

Although we are headquartered in Houston, Texas, we have offices in Brazil, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Trinidad. Our Petro-Habitat HWSEs have been used in countries including, but not limited to, the USA, UK, Canada, Mexico, Trinidad, Suriname, Germany, Brazil, Nigeria, Angola, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, New Zealand, and various countries in the Middle East.

Question 9

What makes PetroHab different from the competition?

Accepted Answer

Not only do we manufacture all of our HWSE products in the USA, but we source all components from U.S. companies — right down to the virtually fireproof Kevlar thread used for all stitching. Our patented Quadra-Lock® panel interlocking technology renders the zippered panels used by competitors practically obsolete. Importantly, whereas most competitors will only lease their habitats, PetroHab stands almost alone in offering its patented and certified habitat systems for either lease or sale, and in providing training and certification programs for customers' personnel on assembly, disassembly, and maintenance.

Question 10

What is PetroHab's safety track record?

Accepted Answer

PetroHab's success is directly attributed to its unwavering commitment to safety, which has resulted in well over a million incident-free man hours worked. As a testament to the extensive training all PetroHab personnel must complete, an average of four PetroHab personnel working on a 28/28 rotation on a platform off the coast of Africa successfully erected and disassembled close to 500 habitats — varying from 2 to 200 cubic meters in size — with zero lost-time accidents or incidents.

Question 11

Trained and certified personnel can operate PetroHab equipment safely and efficiently, reducing dependency on PetroHab field staff for routine operations.

Question 17

How does the Safe-Stop SSS integrate with our existing permit-to-work system?

Accepted Answer

The Safe-Stop™ SSS operates as an independent automatic safety layer within the habitat. It does not replace your permit-to-work system — it complements it by providing continuous automated monitoring and shutdown capability that operates regardless of human intervention. The system's IEC 60079-13:2017 and ATEX certifications are recognized by major operators and can be referenced in your PTW documentation. Contact our team to discuss integration with your specific operational procedures.

Question 18

What gas detection capabilities does the Safe-Stop SSS provide?

Accepted Answer

The Habitat Gas Assembly (HGA) includes a low-lying Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) detector and an LEL detector that can be raised to a height of up to 3 meters to detect light gases such as methane. Optional Oxygen (O2) and Carbon Dioxide (CO2) detectors can also be added. The system monitors both inside and outside the habitat simultaneously. If harmful gas is detected inside the habitat, hot work operations are shut down. If monitored gases are detected at the air intake, both hot work operations and the air intake are shut down immediately.

Question 19

What happens if the habitat loses pressure during hot work operations?

Accepted Answer

If the habitat loses pressure, the Safe-Stop SSS shuts down hot work operations while leaving the intake blower on — maintaining a safe environment inside the enclosure. This automatic response requires no human intervention and occurs immediately upon pressure loss detection. The system's audio and visual alarms alert workers to the condition simultaneously.

Question 20

Can PetroHab habitats be used in Zone 1 classified areas?

Accepted Answer

Yes. PetroHab's Safe-Stop SSS is ATEX and IECEx certified for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, including Zone 1 and Zone 2 classified areas.
